Gary Craig is a self-taught artist whose work has been seen in numerous exhibitions at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, The Royal Glasgow Institute of The Fine Arts and Mall Galleries, London for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. His work is frequently selected for inclusion in the Paisley Art Institute Exhibition, Glasgow, winning the John Green Fine Art Prize in 2012 and the Karl Stern Award for Creative Portraiture in 2015.

The portrait is of the artist’s daughter, Ellie. It shows her in a relaxed stance on a trip home to Galloway to visit her parents from her home in London. He says: ‘The pose is typical of Ellie when she is standing in conversation or thought. The advantage of painting someone you know is that it is so much easier to capture their essence.’
