Antony Williams studied at Farnham College and Portsmouth University. His work has been seen in solo exhibitions in London and Madrid and has been included in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition on eleven occasions. Williams was previously selected for the BP Portrait Award in 1995, 1998, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2017 (third prizewinner) and 2018. His portrait of Amartya Kumar Sen was commissioned for the National Portrait Gallery Collection in 2003.

The portrait is of Ruta, a professional model whom Williams had met when he was teaching a life class. This work was made over several months in Williams’s new studio using the painstaking egg tempera technique.
