The Reception Team assess most new referrals for children’s social work in Aberdeen. They will respond within ten days to determine whether children are in need, or at risk of harm, and there is a need for children’s social work to be involved on a longer term basis. This will include leading on multi-agency planning in response to any immediate risk of harm.

The Joint Child Protection Team will be responsible for referrals where children and families are assessed as:

• at risk or potentially at risk of significant harm
• received an unexplained injury
• at risk of sexual exploitation
• at risk of forced marriage

The Social Work Units based at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital offer a statutory social work response to referrals that primarily focus on working with vulnerable babies and their families, during pregnancy. The Units work closely with multi-agency partners.
