Craigshaw Drive Cycle Tracks

As part of Aberdeen’s Active Travel Action Plan the Council is undertaking improvements to extend the cycle network through West Tullos to Wellington Road. A walking, wheeling and cycling facility along Craigshaw Drive is being constructed between the “Shell Path” and Wellington Road to improve active travel opportunities in the area. The construction will include new segregated cycle tracks along Craigshaw Drive. A parallel crossing will provide safer links to and from the existing Shell path across Abbotswell Road. Works on Abbotswell Road will link the Shell path to the crossing of West Tullos Road with a new shared cycle track.

The construction of the project is jointly funded by our partners Sustrans through the Places for Everyone programme, Nestrans and the Scottish Government through the Cycling, Walking and Safer Routes fund.

Location of the new facilities

Craigshaw Drive connects the A956 Wellington Road to Abbotswell Road, with the existing Shell Path joining Abbotswell Road from the north. The Shell Path providing onwards connections to existing cycling facilities including the Riverside Cycleway and Deeside Way.

Design and typical road layout

  • The new cycle tracks will be with-flow segregated facilities with kerb segregation between the carriageway, cycle track and footway.
  • The new carriageway width will be 7.3m.
  • Typically, the new cycle tracks will be 2m wide with the adjacent footway 1.8m wide.
  • The parking of vehicles will be prohibited along the full length of Craigshaw Drive

Typical junction detail

To reinforce priority for cyclists facilities will be continuous at junctions with side roads. Cycle tracks will join carriageway level becoming a mandatory cycle lane in advance of side roads. Once beyond the junction, the cycle lane will become a segregated facility again.

Typical access detail

At accesses to businesses, to reinforce priority for pedestrians and cyclists, the cycle track and footway will continue with the kerb dropped to allow vehicles to cross. Pedestrians and cyclists will have priority at these locations, in line with the Highway Code.

Crossing locations

  • To assist onward connection to the “Shell Path” two formal crossings are proposed; one over Craigshaw Drive at its northern end and one over Abbotswell Road
  • The proposed crossing is called a parallel crossing. This is a zebra style crossing which incorporates a cycle crossing in parallel with a zebra crossing for pedestrians.

Construction of the project

Leiths (Scotland) Ltd. has been appointed to undertake the construction of the project. Work started on the 9 October 2023 and the works are expected to be completed in Spring 2024. During the construction period temporary diversions will be in place. Information on temporary traffic management measures during the works and contact details can be found on the Leiths (Scotland) website.
