How we use your information
Aberdeen City Libraries will hold a reading challenge, Aberdeen Reads (ARC) to encourage people of all ages including children, young people and families to engage with reading during 2023.
We ask everyone who wishes to participate uses the online form to log participation in the Challenge and to provide some personal information. We ask for this information to keep in touch with you during the Challenge to support your participation, suggest titles that you may be interested in, to alert you to or invite you to an activity or event related to the Challenge and to ask for your feedback and to acknowledge and reward your participation.
We will also use the information you provide to gather statistical information regarding the number, gender and age range of people taking part in the Challenge. We also collect and report on the number of children attending each school in the city who take part. This information is reported internally and is also shared with organisations such as Audit Scotland and the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) and for evaluative purposes. This information is anonymised so that you can’t be identified.
If you are school aged (3-16 years), we would like to let your school know how well you have done and to enable achievement ceremonies to take place if this can be accommodated safely in line with social distancing measures. However, we will ask you in advance of sharing your achievements with your school. We will not share information with anyone else.
How long we will keep your information for
We keep this information during the period of the Challenge and for a maximum of 3 months afterwards to enable statistical reporting. The statistical information will be kept for 5 years for reporting purposes, no personal information is included.
Your rights

You also have the right to make a complaint to theInformation Commissioner’s Office if you think that we haven’t handled your data properly.
Our legal basis
Aberdeen City Council is the Data Controller for your information. Wherever the Council processes your data, we need to make sure we have a legal basis for doing so in data protection law. The Council understands our legal basis for processing your data to provide you with a library service as being part of our public task under the Local Government etc (Scotland) Act 1994.
