Aberdeen City Council recognises that School Age Childcare services play a vital role within our communities, offering a variety of options which families can rely on to support their childcare needs before and after school, and during the school holidays.
It is not currently a statutory service, like Early Learning and Childcare, however it is a crucial service for many families who rely on it to enable them to work or study and it contributes positively to the economic development of the city as well as helping to improve outcomes for children and young people.
Aberdeen City Council’s policy is that all schools, will work with parents and School Age Childcare providers to provide a suitable location, to establish and support School Age Childcare, where there is sufficient parental demand and where it is viable and cost effective.
Regulation of all School Age Childcare is undertaken by the Care Inspectorate.
Part 8 of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 requires Local Authorities to consult regularly with parents and carers about the provision of day care for school aged children. Aberdeen City Council has well established systems to engage with stakeholders to secure feedback and improvement and formally consults with parents, carers and children on a regular basis.

The below documents provide more information about School Age Childcare locally and nationally.
A new School Age Childcare Policy, in recognition of the increased need for wraparound care once children start primary school, was introduced by Aberdeen City Council in September 2024.
Following the national implementation of Early Learning and Childcare expansion, there has been a natural increase in demand for School Age Childcare, as parents and carers look to secure continuity of childcare when their children start primary school.
