Join the School Placings and Exclusions Appeal Committee

Would you like to play a vital role in education in Aberdeen?

Why not join the Aberdeen City School Placings and Exclusions Appeals Committee?

The Aberdeen City School Placings and Exclusions Appeals Committee considers appeals against the refusal of school placing requests or against exclusion from schools as required by the Education (Scotland) Act 1980.

In Aberdeen, the current practice is for an Appeals Committee to be made up of three members, comprising a mix of the following:

  • An elected member of the Council (a Councillor).
  • A person considered to have expertise in education.
  • Parents of a child in education at an Aberdeen City school who are current or previous members of a Parent Council.

Meetings are held as and when a placing or exclusion appeal request is received. However, in May and June, the number of appeals increases substantially as this is the time of the year when multiple appeals are considered for those schools with more applications than places. We are looking to expand the list of committee members and are seeking applications from new members who fall into any of the above categories to join the existing pool of School Placings and Exclusions Appeals Committee members.

Criteria for members

To join the Commitee, you must be either a parent of a child of school age in education at an Aberdeen City school who are current or previous members of a Parent Council, or a person considered to have expertise in education. It is important that the Committee has a balanced membership. Parent Council and education expert members have a very important role to play on the Committee and bring a different perspective.

You cannot apply if you are employed in an administrative or advisory role in the Education and Children's Services Department at Aberdeen City Council.

Please note that all meetings are held remotely o Microsoft Teams. All successful applicants will require to go through a PVG check prior to appointments being confirmed.

Training

Members receive initial training sessions to cover the legal requirements of making decisions at the meetings, and observe a committee session prior to taking part. A programme of refresher training is also offered as required.
