Aberdeen City Council provides and staffs a mortuary facility for all deaths where the Procurator Fiscal may require a post mortem examination to be carried out to determine the cause of death. This facility, which forms part of Police Scotland Headquarters at Queen Street in Aberdeen, also provides a service for Aberdeenshire, Moray and Shetland Councils, as required. NHS Grampian is responsible for the provision of mortuary facilities for deaths that occur on NHS premises.
Staff at the City Mortuary assist the pathologist during post mortem examinations and will ensure that the deceased are suitably stored until they are formally released to family members for burial or cremation.
