Your data: Interpretation and Translation Service

How we use your information 

Your data will be interpreted or translated into your preferred language to ensure that you fully understand verbal and written information provided to you. It will not be used for any other purpose once the interpretation or translation has taken place.

Who we share information with

We have an external provider who is contracted to supply interpretation and translation services to the Council as they have the skills, ability and experience to do so. 

The provider is contracted from a national procurement framework with the Scottish Government that allows Scottish Local Authorities to used approved providers for a full range of interpretation and translation services via phone, face to face, video interpretation, translation and transcription.

The provider contracted by the Council is Global Connections (Scotland) Ltd. 

How long we keep information for

For interpretation services, either face to face, telephone or video call, no record of the interpretation is created as this is done in ‘real time’.  

For translations or transcriptions, the translated document or transcript will be held in accordance with the retention requirement of the original document.

Your rights

You have rights in relation to your data, including the right to ask for a copy of it. See more information about all the rights you have and how they work in practice, as well as contact details for the Council’s Data Protection Officer. You also have the right to make a complaint to the Information Commissioner’s Office. They are the body responsible for making sure organisations like the Council handle your data properly.

Our legal basis

Aberdeen City Council is the Data Controller for this information. Wherever we process data, we need have a legal basis in data protection law for doing so. The Council understands our legal basis for processing your data in relation to providing an interpretation and translation service is that it is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of the official authority vested in the Council.  
In doing so, we are also likely to process special categories of personal data about you. The Council understands our legal basis for doing so as being necessary for reasons of substantial public interest.
