Care experienced young people

There are an increasing number of opportunities for care experienced young people in Aberdeen to share their voice and lived experience to make care experience better. The ACE (Aberdeen Care Experienced) Group is one way that care experienced young people are empowered to participate, influence and make change in the city.

What is ACE?

ACE stands for Aberdeen Care Experienced and it is for looked after and care experienced children and young people to engage, participate and discuss issues and ideas that are important to them. All these issues are then brought to the Aberdeen Champion's Board, Aberdeen City Council and others to ensure that the voice and lived experience of young people is heard and included. Our aim is to make a change and have fun doing it.

ACE includes a range of activities:

  • ACEmeet takes place on the last Thursday of every month at the Westburn Resource Centre, 116 Westburn Road, Aberdeen, AB25 2QA, but check out Facebook and Twitter for updates.
  • ACE@Home means we meet at your home. This helps young people who find it difficult to get to the ACEmeets to still participate, engage and get their voices heard. These meetings happen regularly. To find out more, get in touch using the details below.
  • ACEsport is the highly interactive sports events we have every two weeks. These include a range of great activities such as football, touch rugby, skiing, curling, cricket, yoga and more. Check out Facebook and Twitter for updates.
  • ACEalumni is for care experienced people who are older than 26. This group connects with other activities nationally. To find out more, get in touch using the details below.
  • fACE2fACE are small meetings for consulting about specific issues about care experience in Aberdeen and across Scotland and the UK.
  • Check out our newsletter which is published every quarter. It is full of information about what is happening and opportunities to engage and participate. You can download the latest issues from the Related documents section below.

Who can get involved?

You can get involved with ACE if you are a young person up to the age of 26 who is or has been care experienced at some point in your life. This might include:

  • Living in a children's home
  • Secure or residential care
  • Foster care - with a carer
  • Kinship care - with family or friends
  • Living at home with social work support

ACEalumni is for people older than 26 years and who want to make a difference.

What is a Champion's Board?

A Champions Board is made up of professionals from different organisations who have the power to make positive changes for young people. They meet with the young people involved in ACE four times a year to offer their support, listen to what needs to be done and to take responsibility for their organisation in making care better for young people.
