Aberdeen City War Memorials - Individuals

The list below is not a definitive list of information and should only be seen as a start to the history of War Memorials to individuals in Aberdeen. It should also be noted that some of these may not be readily accessible to the public. Also some sites may not be suitable for access by people with mobility difficulties.

The information is from a variety of sources including the Aberdeen City Archives, the Local Studies section of the Central Library, Aberdeen Maritime Museum, University of Aberdeen, Historic Environment Scotland, the UK National Inventory of War Memorials, Commonwealth War Graves Commission and War Memorials Online.  

This is in honour of Lance Corporal Allan Stewart Douglas, who died serving in Iraq on the 30 January 2006. He was born in Aberdeen, growing up in Northfield and attended Northfield Academy before joining the British Army.

This bronze statue, with inscribed Correnie granite plinth, of Major-General Charles George Gordon R.E.C.E, is sited outside Robert Gordon´s College. Born in January 1833, he fell in his country´s service at Khartoum, January 1885. This statue was one of sculptor Thomas Stuart-Burnett´s last commissioned works.

The Merson Memorial Window in the Antechapel was designed by William Wilson and dedicated to Captain William Murison Smith Merson of the Gordon Highlanders who was killed in France in 1916. The Antechapel is Aberdeen University's War Memorial. Five hundred and twenty-four members of the University are commemorated on the panelling around the walls. The War Memorial Window was made by Douglas Strachan in 1920-1.

As part of a memorial garden to Lady MacRobert, the granite wall has the names of her three sons that fell in service during the Second World War, along with a a mosaic that presents the family coat of arms "Not For Themselves But For Their Native Land".

James Meston Reid, a Major in the Royal Engineers, he caught malaria in Salonika and was invalided home. He volunteered for Archangel on the Russian front and died of pneumonia.

Captain John Eugene Crombie, is remembered by a plaque. There are various memorials of the congregation of St Machar and St. Mary who died in the two World Wars. There is also a stained glass window. Similarly the United Free Church Parishioners memorial previously located in St. Mary's United Free Church in Old Aberdeen.

Poet Charles Hamilton Sorley was born on 19 May 1895 in Aberdeen and lived in Powis House, now the Powis Gateway Community Centre where a memorial plaque has been unveiled. He was killed during the Battle of Loos on 13 October 1915 whilst serving as a Captain in the Suffolk Regiment.
