Library book pick ups

In line with Scottish Government & Aberdeen City Council guidelines and to ensure the safety of our staff and customers, during COVID-19 Protection Level 4 our library buildings will be closed to the public from Saturday 26 December. Our Library book pick up service will be available from Tuesday 29 December.


How to use the library book pick up service

In addition to limited browsing, library members are able to pre-order items for collection from one of the following libraries:

Central Library, Airyhall Library, Bridge of Don Library, Cove Library, Culter LibraryDyce LibraryMastrick Library and Tillydrone Library.

Using the online booking form you can order a selection of books for adults, children and families (based on your preferences e.g. crime, classics, non-fiction, etc).

Alternatively you can make a reservation via Spydus and then book a slot to collect your reservation. In line with current guidance, slots are limited to one customer per 10 minute appointment, with a 5 minute gap between each booking to prevent queuing and allow for social distancing.

The options available to book are "Library Book Pick Up" or "Return Items Only". Please note that if you have booked a "Library Book Pick Up" appointment, you can return items at the same time. You do not need to book an additional appointment to return items when collecting.

Slots will be available between 10.00am - 12.45pm (Monday-Saturday) & 2.00pm - 4.45pm (Monday-Friday), with the exception of Culter Library which will be open 10am - 12.45pm & 2pm - 4.45pm (Monday-Thursday).

Visiting the library

We want to reassure our library customers that we are following strict quarantine guidelines with returned books being placed into storage for 72 hours before being returned to stock rotation.

We ask that if you develop any symptoms associated with COVID-19 prior to your collection timeslot, that you cancel and should you develop any symptoms following your collection that you inform us immediately to allow contact tracing. You can do this by contacting Aberdeen City Libraries on 01224 652500 between 10am-1pm (Monday-Saturday) or 2pm-5pm (Monday-Friday).

Please take note of the following information & safety measures and ensure that they are adhered to at all times.


  • Click & Collect pick ups will take place at the main entrance for the library (Media Centre entrance at Central Library)
  • You should arrive no more than 5 minutes prior to your pre-booked collection timeslot;
  • One member of a household will be permitted entry with the exception of those with carers and those with children under the age of 16;
  • You must be arrive in time for your allocated collection timeslot, late arrivals may not be able to collect their items;
  • It is your responsibility to observe the 2-metre social distancing rule from others, however floor markings will indicate distance between customers
  • Face masks should be worn when collecting your reservations or returning items (unless you are medically exempt)



Here are a selection of frequently asked questions, designed to give you a greater understanding of how the new library book pick up service will work.

Click and Collect is a new service that allows users to reserve a selection of items based on their reading preferences for collection from their local library during a pre-booked timeslot.

Library book pick ups will be available at the following libraries:

Central Library, Airyhall Library, Bridge Of Don Library, Cove Library, Culter LibraryDyce Library, Mastrick Library and Tillydrone Library.

The libraries will offer timeslots between 10am - 1pm (Monday to Saturday) & 2pm - 5pm (Monday to Friday) with the exception of Culter Library which is 10am - 1pm & 2pm - 5pm (Monday to Thursday).

We are currently working out the best way to open with all the challenges that come from implementing social distancing measures.

Ensuring that we open safely and securely for both our staff and our customers, we are initially reopening libraries where is easier for us to control social distancing measures. While we appreciate that many of you are looking forward to returning to your local library, we will not consider opening until we are confident that we can do so safely, and we will tell you as soon as we are ready.

Members of Aberdeen City Libraries are free to book a Library book pick up slot at any of the libraries offering this service.

You are able to place a reservation for items via our Online catalogue. You may only place a reservation for items available at the libraries open for Click & Collect. When booking an appointment, to collect your reservation, select the "Collect Reservation" option.

Yes, you can join online via our website. You can then book a library book pick up slot and pick up your library card when you visit the library. Please bring a form of ID with you.

At this moment in time we are unable to process membership applications in person at the library or over the phone. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

When items are returned to the library, they are placed in quarantine for 72 hours before being processed back into the collection by library staff, hence the delay in discharging items from an account. No fines or charges are being placed on items during this time.

Yes, when collecting your items at your pre-booked slot you will be able to ask the library staff for one roll of food waste bags (stock permitting).
