How to access our records
Visit our offices
17 March 2020: In line with advice from the UK and Scottish Government and to delay the spread of Coronavirus our public search rooms at Old Aberdeen House and the Town House are now closed until further notice. A limited enquiry service will be available by email: firstname.lastname@example.org but please bear in mind that we have access to limited resources.
We recommend making an appointment as space in the search rooms is limited. We would also advise getting in touch to discuss your research beforehand if you haven't visited before, so that we can help identify records that might be of help and to let you know which office you will need to visit to view them.

If you're visiting from outside the area, you might find the information on the Routes to your North East Roots website helpful to co-ordinate visits to different places and make the most of your stay.
Our Table of Fees gives our charges for the production of valuation rolls and electoral registers for business or legal purposes.
Access to records containing information about living individuals is restricted under the Data Protection Act. These include school records, poor relilef records, and public assistance records. Please Contact us for guidance on accessing these records. The following types of identification can be used when requesting records covered by the Data Protection Acts
Digitised kirk session records from throughout Scotland are available at both search rooms via the Scottish Documents website. We also offer access to our digitised poor relief records and their indexes at both offices.
A limited number of our records are available online as digitised images or transcriptions. Go to our Explore our Records page to find out more.
Our research service
If you're not able to visit our offices, we offer a research service. The first 15 minutes research is free, and then we can undertake up to one hour of research which is charged at £25 per 30 minutes research.
We recommend that you give a brief summary of the information you have when you get in touch, such as the names of any people you're looking for, their relationships, dates of birth or residence, and a location. An outline of the information you hope to find is helpful, as well as any specific records you'd like us to check.
Once a search has been agreed, we issue a quote for the work based on our estimate of how long the research will take.

In most cases, we strongly suggest getting in touch to discuss your requirements before sending a copy request, but if you have specific page numbers or references, or have already been issued a quote for copying, you can download our Copy Request Form here and send a copy request.
