Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards
VACMA Aberdeen: in partnership with Creative Scotland
Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards (VACMA) 2018/19 - Aberdeen City
Aberdeen City Council is committed to supporting the work of their resident artists and encouraging innovative professional practice in contemporary arts and crafts. In partnership with Creative Scotland, Aberdeen City Council have established two award schemes as a means of assisting individual artists and makers at all stages of their career. The award schemes are intended to support practitioners who can demonstrate significant progression and artistic development of their practice and an ongoing commitment to their work through the creation of new work, new skills and/or new opportunities.
The Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards in Aberdeen City welcome applications from artists working in contemporary visual arts and crafts that are practicing in and are residents of Aberdeen City:
- Visual Artists - practitioners in the fields of drawing, painting, sculpture, print making, photography, animation, film, digital and moving image as well as installation works including sound, text and/or performance elements.
- Craft /Makers - practitioners principally concerned with contemporary creative work conceived, designed and made by individual practitioners in ceramics, furniture and wood, glass, jewellery and metalwork and textiles.
The awards are allocated for individuals to undertake self-determined artistic and professional development. The aim is to support artistic experimentation and creation of new work that adds to the growing reputation of Aberdeen's artistic community and helps individuals to develop their skills and talent. Both schemes aim to help towards activities that are integral to the practitioner's personal and professional development, such as the immediate costs of researching, creating and presenting new work or advancing skills, technical ability and ideas.
Applicants can apply to both schemes, but if successful would only be awarded for one.
There are two schemes/strands of funding:
Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards
Open to visual artists and craft makers of all stages of their career, living and practicing in Aberdeen City. Individual development grants will be awarded towards the costs of activities that are integral to the practitioner's personal and professional development. Awards of £500 up to £1,500 are available. While applications can be for the full amount of funds requested, this will not automatically be awarded. The Awards Panel may offer an amount other than that requested, dependent on how well the application meets key criteria, value for money and in context of demand for funds from other applicants. A total of £8,000 of funding will be made available through the awards scheme.
Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards Mentoring Scheme
Open to visual artists and craft makers at all stages of their career, living and practicing in Aberdeen City. One individual award of £1,500 will be made after the October deadline and a second award will be made in February. This is to support successful applicants to undertake self-determined artistic and professional development who will be allocated additional support from a dedicated and paid professional mentor working in their relevant field. The mentee will be suitably matched with a trained mentor. Together you will devise a structured but flexible scheme over a 6-12 month period as determined by the needs of the awarded Visual Art or Craft Maker. A total of £3,000 of funding is available through the mentoring scheme.
