Message from the Director of Education and Children's Services, Gayle Gorman:
Gayle Gorman recently made the move from England to Scotland having had a notable career in England, latterly the Director of Learning, at Cambridgeshire County Council. Gayle was National Senior Director for Literacy, where she was responsible for leading the National Literacy Strategy and has helped to shape major educational policies at national level. Gayle also led the Every Child a Writer programme, Support for Writing, and the Intensifying Support Programme for under-performing schools.
On coming to Aberdeen I was excited by the challenge of running such important services in a major city like Aberdeen. Aberdeen is committed to providing its citizens with the very best in education, culture and sport. I am personally delighted to be living and working in Scotland, especially in beautiful Aberdeen.
Making the move from south of the Border has been an interesting one. I was worried about the different education approaches, curriculum and changes since leaving Scotland over 20 years ago – but education remains constant wherever you are – and the wonderful new curriculum in Scotland encourages innovation, risk taking and creativity. The system is 'education led' and this has enabled the sector to remain true to its principles. It is refreshing to see an inspection process that is both collaborative and supportive, with a focus on development and improvement in a safe, nurturing environment. There is a partnership approach to school improvement and a collective focus on improving education together.
Schools in Aberdeen City have embraced Curriculum for Excellence and have developed innovative approaches to learning, which ensures students have the very best pedagogy underpinned by the knowledge and skills they will need for learning, life and work. Our schools are ambitious, aspirational and pupils both attain and achieve as a result. Our schools are enterprising with some excellent business and community links. Furthermore our Developing Global Citizenship programme ensures our students are well connected and active in engaging in worldwide affairs as well as local citizenship issues. All in all Aberdeen is an exciting, energetic place to be!
More exciting still is our aspiration to strengthen our teaching team. To help further support effective transitions from primary to secondary we are now recruiting teachers to work with pupils in the upper stages of primary school. We are also looking to recruit teachers in Physics, Chemistry and Business Studies - all vital areas of the curriculum if Aberdeen is to continue to operate as the Energy Capital of Europe.
Aberdeen is not only a great place to work but is also a great place to live and continue your own learning. Aberdeen has a plethora of cultural attractions, a vibrant art scene and access to some of the best coastline and countryside in Scotland. For those keen to keep on learning, Aberdeen has two fine universities, a college well connected to our schools and a host of other learning opportunities. Our leadership development programme has seen both newly appointed and aspirational leaders in education well supported in their career progression. All of our staff have access to active teacher networks which are well attended and are having an impact on sharing our learning across Aberdeen and nationally. Lastly, our staff benefit from the support of a Curriculum Development Officer team who assist with course delivery, producing teaching resources and supporting the very best teaching and learning for all our learners.
I hope that you too will consider finding out more about a career in Aberdeen and joining the team in the beautiful and inspiring city of Aberdeen.
