Weights and measures

Trading Standards has responsibilities to ensure that businesses comply with weights and measures legislation. This includes inspecting that weighing and measuring equipment (such as shop scales, weighbridges, and petrol pumps) is suitable and accurate; and testing goods sold by weight, volume, or number to check quantities are accurate.

Consumer

If you have concerns regarding underweight products, short measure, or inaccurate weighing/measuring equipment please report it through Advice Direct Scotland.

Please provide as much information about the product/equipment, place and date of purchase, manufacturer/retailer details, and the reason for your concern. This will be passed to Trading Standards for further investigation.

Business

If you use weighing or measuring equipment for a regulated purpose, or sell or package goods by weight, volume, or number, you are responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant weights and measures legislation requirements.

Please visit the Business Companion website for more guidance on weights and measure compliance for business.

If you are a business and would like further advice in relation to weights and measures law, then you can contact Trading Standards.
