What it is?
The RAF helps Aberdeen City Council tenants who are struggling with money and at risk of rent arrears. Payments go straight into your rent account. We don’t pay cash to tenants or third parties.
Who we can help
You may be considered if you:
- rent from Aberdeen City Council (Secure or Short Scottish Secure Tenancy)
- are engaging with the Council or a support service (for example, money advice)
- have rent arrears caused by money problems and your budget is under pressure
- can keep up with rent going forward with the right support.
Examples of money problems
- sudden loss of income (job loss, reduced hours, illness, or bereavement)
- issues during Universal Credit migration or when starting a new tenancy
- unexpected essential costs linked to illness or bereavement
- rising cost of living.
What your referrer will do
They will check you meet the basic rules, explain your situation, and share details of your income and spending. We may ask for extra information.
What happens next
- we check the details against Council systems
- a panel of officers reviews your case
- we send the decision to your referrer, who will explain it to you
- if approved, we pay into your rent account within 7 days.
Extra support
You’re expected to work with advice services where needed. They can help you claim everything you’re entitled to and deal with debts so your rent is affordable.
If your referral isn’t approved
There is no formal right of appeal, but your referrer can ask us to review the decision.
How to get help
Tenants can’t apply directly, please speak to your Housing Support Officer if you are struggling to pay your rent. If you are struggling with debts and receiving support from our Money Advice Team they will discuss this with you or if you are engaging with one of our partner organisations they can make a referral for you if appropriate.
