Pupils Launch Art Project at Northfield Academy

Pupils at Northfield Academy yesterday held a launch event to celebrate the start of an 18-month project with Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums.

Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums were invited to the school to see the quality of the artwork being created by pupils and will assist in providing a range of opportunities for the young people to develop their creative skills by engaging with professional artists and showcasing their work to a range of audiences.

This first event saw young people showcase their own art works alongside caring for and sharing some of the many treasures from the Treasure Hub with members of the community.

The school further received a visit from the Travelling Gallery bus from the City Arts Centre in Edinburgh, which has visited several schools across Aberdeen.

Education Convener Councillor Martin Greig said: “This partnership with the Art Gallery has been an excellent opportunity for developing the skills and talents of pupils at Northfield Academy.

“The involvement of Edinburgh’s City Arts Centre demonstrates the importance and the value of this project. The support of professionals in developing skills of the young people is hugely appreciated. It is great to celebrate these positive achievements at the school.”

Education Vice-Convener Councillor Jessica Mennie said: “It is fantastic to see all the amazing time and hard work that the young people have put in to create their artwork and the pride they have to show their work and school off to the local community.”

This is the first in a series of events designed to help the young people of Northfield shift the narrative about their school and community.
