Historic maps are fascinating objects. The surveying of land, with its sense of exploration and assorted instruments, is an evocative part of the cartographic process. Join local historian Dr Douglas Lockhart to discover the historical reality behind the romance as he details the life and work of three noted land surveyors.
Each began their careers in the north east of Scotland before emigrating to the distant topography of Australia and New Zealand. The stories of Robert Ray, Alexander Ogg and George Campbell Smith will be illustrated with photographs, newspapers, archival material and plenty of maps.
