Re-naming Statement

Re-naming artworks in Aberdeen Archives, Gallery & Museums’ collection

Some language in the titles of artworks in our collection is racist, offensive, and discriminatory.

Our museum service dates back to 1885 and our records have been created throughout the decades. Consequently, there may be terms that we would no longer choose to use.

We will remove this language where it appears in titles and replace specific terms, or amend whole titles as necessary, as we come across it in the course of working with the collection.

If the language is integral to the meaning, intention and/or understanding of the artwork, we will consult with our communities, academic, cultural, and social policy organisations, as well as with our visitors and digital audiences before deciding to remove offensive language.

How can I find out if an object has been re-named?
• Search the online collection pages. If an object has been re-named your search will show both the current and the historical title. You can find the online collection pages.

• Explore the selection on our e-museum that draws together all re-named artworks. This package will be updated as additional artworks are re-named. You can find it here

• Get in touch with us to request the full list by completing an online enquiry form and selecting the ‘Collections’ enquiry type from the drop-down menu.

Why are we re-naming objects?
We seek to create a culture that values all the differences that communities bring, and which values openness, fairness and transparency. We will continually strive to maintain an environment in which people from all backgrounds can live and work together harmoniously by challenging unlawful or unfair discrimination, prejudice, stereotyping, harassment, and undignified and disrespectful behaviour.

Aberdeen Archives, Gallery & Museums is part of Aberdeen City Council. We are committed to adhering to the General Duty on public authorities contained in the Equality Act 2010. We take this duty seriously and maintain due regard when carrying out public functions to the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and advance equality of opportunity.

We do not condone the use of any racist, or discriminatory language, or any language that causes offence. You can find Aberdeen City Council’s Equality Outcomes and Mainstreaming Report 2021-2025 here.
