Linx Ice Arena
The European Curling Championships starts on Friday 4th December 2009 and runs until the 12 December 2009
The competition hosted in Aberdeen in partnership with Curl Aberdeen and welcomes 56 teams from all over Europe. It is the last competitive opportunity for the curlers before the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in January 2010.
Organisers of the European competition will hand back the ice arena on 15 December, which will allow arena staff time to prepare for the reopening to the public on 19 December. Celebration events planned around the opening include an exhibition hockey match, public sessions and a Chitty, Chitty, Bang Bang on Ice show spectacular. Aberdeen City Council deputy leader Kevin Stewart said: "I'm chuffed to bits that the Linx Ice Arena is re-opening next week and that skaters can get back on the ice in an improved venue, which will be appreciated by the award-winning skaters who have continued to do well even during the closure period."
Vice-convener of Education, Culture and Sport Councillor Martin Greig said: "The council has made a very substantial investment in the ice arena. This is because we support ice sport and want to encourage more people to get involved in skating, ice hockey and all the other various kinds of ice sporting events".
"The arena is a place that encourages and supports ice sport for all ages, abilities and backgrounds. More people need to get involved in ice sport and the Linx Ice Arena is a splendid facility to boost participation".
Director of Education, Culture and Sport Annette Bruton added: "I am delighted that the Linx Ice Arena will be open for use by the public. It is also wonderful for the City to be able to welcome the European Curling Championships."
Other facilities available include: Ice pad, Café, Skate sharpening service, Occasional bar, In-line skate hire.
