David Northcroft: Grampian Lives

On 09 Aug 2017

Over the last 16 years David Northcroft has been engaged on a personal oral history project: to investigate 20th century everyday life in the North east of Scotland. To date he has conducted some 500 face to face interviews with a wide range of people, ga

Join us at this 125 celebratory talk to hear David explain his work building up a representative portrait of the region's most significant experiences: farming, going to school, life in fishing communities, sports, the arts, the role of the church, war time memories and much more. Although he has interviewed notable North east names such as Robbie Shepherd, Stewart Milne, Buff Hardie, Jimmy Milne, Neil Simpson, Hugh Pennington among others, the stories told by the farmers, the fishermen and their wives, by the posties, the district nurses, the joiners, the plumbers, the dominies and the many others who have contributed to the welfare of our local communities have proved equally interesting and enlightening.

To date his work has yielded two books: Grampian Lives 1: 1900-1950 and Grampian Lives 2: 1950-2000. David is currently working on a complementary pair of volumes that will concentrate on Aberdeen itself - Aberdeen Lives: Aberdeen at Work and Play and Aberdeen at War and Peace. His talk will dip into a selection of the multitude of recollections which fill the pages of his celebrated books.
