Frequently Asked Question

People tell me I should claim Carers Allowance. What is it and how do I get it?

Carers Allowance is quite a complicated benefit. There are basic qualifying criteria that must be met before applying, these are:
  • Be aged 16 or over and satisfy UK residence and presence tests
  • Spend at least 35 hours caring for someone who is in receipt of Attendance Allowance or the middle rate care component of Disability Living Allowance
  • Not earn more that 84 per week (2006/7)
  • Must not be in full-time education

If you feel that you satisfy the above basic criteria, contact the Welfare Rights Workers for Carers at VSA Carers Centre on 01224 646677 who will go into more details specific to your own individual circumstances.
