Frequently Asked Question

Why do I pay rates?

Rates are charged on business properties to allow local authorities to raise income for the services they provide. These services are generic and not specific and range from education and social work to street cleansing and consumer protection, to name a few. The income the Council receives comes from 3 sources a) Council Tax b) Business Rates c) Government grants. If Business Rates were not charged, Council Tax would increase and vice versa.
