Bridge of Dee Study Conceptual Drawings

The Bridge of Dee Study is now in the initial appraisal stage of the project as part of the Scottish Transport Appraisal Guidance (STAG) Part 1.

Concepts that have been taken forward to initial appraisal from the Pre-Appraisal stage are:

  • Concept 5: Additional Downstream Crossing;
  • Concept 6 and 6a: Additional Upstream Crossing (including variants of a link northwards to the A90 from its connection with Garthdee Road and/or a new eastern link between Garthdee Road and the A93); and
  • Concept 7: Additional Adjacent Crossing

The preparation of preliminary design drawings required for each Concept has been undertaken and the draft drawings can be found below along with a summary description of each concept:

Concept 5

Concept 5 consists of a new two lane dual carriageway downstream crossing connecting Holburn Street to Great Southern Road. New signal controlled junctions will be provided on either end of the new crossing.

Junction improvements will also be undertaken under Concept 5 at the following locations:

  • New signalised junction between Garthdee Road, South Anderson Drive, Holburn Street and Bridge of Dee on northern end of the existing Bridge of Dee
  • New signalised junction between Leggart Terrace, Bridge of Dee, Great Southern Road and A90 Stonehaven Road on southern end of the existing Bridge of Dee
  • Improvement to the existing roundabout located between Great Southern Road, The King George VI Bridge, West Tullos Road and Provost Watt Drive

A new link road will be provided between B9077 Leggart Terrace and the A90 Stonehaven Road. A new signalised junction will be provided at the interchange between the A90, Nigg Way and the new Leggart Terrace link road. A new bus only gate will be provided on Leggart Terrace east of the new link road to restrict access to Leggart Terrace. All strategic traffic will now utilise the new link road and the A90.

A new non-motorised user (NMU) crossing is also provided as part of Concept 5 adjacent to the existing Bridge of Dee to provide a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. The removal of the footways from the existing Bridge of Dee will allow the width of the existing road to be increased enabling Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and buses to utilise the existing Bridge of Dee.

All existing pedestrian crossings throughout the network will be retained.

Concept 6

Concept 6 consists of a new two lane dual carriageway upstream crossing connecting Garthdee Road to Leggart Terrace. New signal controlled junctions will be provided on either end of the new crossing.

A new link road will be provided between B9077 Leggart Terrace and the A90 Stonehaven Road. The alignment of the new link road will connect with the new upstream crossing. A new signalised junction will be provided at the interchange between the A90, Nigg Way and the new Leggart Terrace link road. The new signalised junction will allow all traffic movements at the junction. A new bus only gate will be provided on Leggart Terrace east of the new link road to restrict access to Leggart Terrace. All strategic traffic will now utilise the new crossing and/or the new link road and the A90.

The existing Garthdee Road between the new crossing northern tie-in and its junction with South Anderson Drive will be improved to provide a minimum two lanes in each direction. To achieve the minimum required number of lanes the existing road will be widened and the existing roundabouts improved.

Junction improvements will also be undertaken as part of Concept 6 at the following locations:

  • Improvements to the existing roundabout at the junction between Garthdee Road, South Anderson Drive, Holburn Street and Bridge of Dee on northern end of the existing Bridge of Dee

A new non-motorised user (NMU) crossing is also provided as part of Concept 6 adjacent to the existing Bridge of Dee to provide a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. The removal of the footways from the existing Bridge of Dee will allow the width of the existing road to be increased enabling Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and buses to utilise the existing Bridge of Dee.

All existing pedestrian crossings throughout the network will be retained.

Concept 6 - Environmental Constraints (referenced as Appendix B in the Engineering Assessment Report):

Concept 6 - Potential Bridge Structures (referenced as Appendix A in the Structures Option Report):

Concept 6a

Concept 6A is a variant of Concept 6 with the following additional improvement added.

A new single carriageway link road will be provided between Garthdee Road and South Anderson Drive to the north. Signalised junctions will be provided at either end of the new link road. The strategic traffic will be directed towards the new link with the section of the existing Garthdee Road between the new crossing northern tie-in and the link road improved to provide a minimum two lanes in each direction. Under this concept the improvement to Garthdee Road described in Concept 6 would not be undertaken as the strategic traffic would be diverted onto the new link.

Concept 6a - Potential Bridge Structures (referenced as Appendix A in the Structures Option Report):

Concept 6b

Concept 6B is a variant of Concept 6 with the following additional improvement added.

A new single carriageway link road will be provided between Garthdee Road and A93 North Deeside Road to the north. Signalised junctions will be provided at either end of the new link road. The strategic traffic will be directed towards the new link. (Note that no location for this link road has been identified as yet so the draft drawings do not show this link).

Concept 7

Concept 7 consists of a new three lane dual carriageway crossing adjacent to the existing Bridge of Dee. A new signal controlled junctions will be provided on the south side of the Dee and the existing roundabout to the north will be reconfigured to accommodate the new crossing.

The existing Bridge of Dee will be retained as a dedicated non-motorised user (NMU) crossing to provide a safer crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists.

Junction improvements will also be undertaken as part of Concept 7 at the following locations:

  • Existing roundabout at the junction between Garthdee Road, South Anderson Drive, Holburn Street and Bridge of Dee on northern end of the existing Bridge of Dee to be improved to accommodate the new crossing
  • New signalised junction between Leggart Terrace, Bridge of Dee, Great Southern Road and A90 Stonehaven Road on southern end of the existing Bridge of Dee
  • Improvement to the roundabout located between Great Southern Road, The King George VI Bridge, West Tullos Road and Provost Watt Drive

A new link road will be provided between B9077 Leggart Terrace and the A90 Stonehaven Road. A new signalised junction will be provided at the interchange between the A90, Nigg Way and the new Leggart Terrace link road. The new signalised junction will allow all traffic movements at the junction. A new bus only gate will be provided on Leggart Terrace east of the new link road to restrict access to Leggart Terrace. All strategic traffic will now utilise the new link road and the A90.

All existing pedestrian crossings throughout the network will be retained.

Please note that the concepts are still in development and the purpose is to provide a set of outline plans for discussion and comment. This will enable highlighted issues to be considered as part of the continuing appraisal process.

The following list of frequently asked question gives responses to a number of queries that been received to date on the draft layouts. This list of questions and responses will be updated as the study progresses.

Any comments on the above layouts can be made in writing with the heading "Bridge of Dee Study" to the address detailed on the first page or can alternatively be emailed to us at programmes@aberdeencity.gov.uk making sure the subject heading contains the words "Bridge of Dee Study".

Also note that at this time no decision has been taken to proceed with any of the options under consideration and no view has been taken as to whether any of the options under consideration may be preferred.
