Mental Health Employability Services

The following services offer support, training and employment opportunities to people with mental health needs and brain injuries.

  • Cornerstone, Scarf and Solstice only supply services to people with Mental Health Needs
  • Enable only supply services to people with brain injuries.
  • Momentum, Send-it and Turning Point supply services to people with Mental Health Needs and Brain Injuries.

How the service works:

The individual, with or without the support of a professional or carer:

  • chooses the employment service that they feel best meets their needs
  • makes contact with this service, followed by a meeting/visit. An agreement is made as to whether or not the employment service is suitable.
  • if the employment service is suitable, a referral is made by the employment service for approval to Jane Alexander within Social Care and Wellbeing (JaneAlexander@aberdeencity.gov.uk)
  • Social Care and Wellbeing approves the placement and the number of hours requested
  • a waiting list may be operating

Solstice Nurseries

Solstice Nurseries is a social firm that 'grows people and plants'. It provides work related training and experience with the option Solstice Workers of a VQ in Amenity Horticulture for people who have experienced mental illness (including those with co-occurring substance misuse) within their horticultural nursery and their garden maintenance teams.

Rosie's Social Enterprise

Rosie's Social Enterprises is part of the charity Turning Point Scotland. Rosie's provides vocational training, support and work experience for people recovering from mental health issues and acquired brain injury (ABI). Rosie's Logo

It has a range of placement opportunities in Rosie's Café, Rosie's Framers & Crafts, and Rosie's Wedding Stationery and it offers other placements in administration, retail and cleaning. Rosie's can offer multi-based placements across their services with tailored on-the-job and specific training to suit the needs of the individual.

Cornerstone's Employment Service - For People with Mental Health Needs

Cornerstone's Employment Service is tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual and can help with:

  • Identifying and achieving goals relating to employment & training Cornerstone Logo
  • Pre-employment support; CVs & application forms, interview preparation and confidence building
  • Working with employers to secure work placements which may lead to an offer of permanent employment
  • Volunteering opportunities through local volunteer centres and our internal volunteering service
  • In-work support; mentoring, job coaching, training for employers

SCARF

SCARF offer bespoke and person-centred employability services and realistic work placements for individuals with issues of Mental Health and wellbeing. SCARF Logo

Support Services

  • SCARF offers administrative placements within its Support Services department, delivering opportunity for individuals who are seeking to work in an office environment, learning office software, telephone skills and general business and office conduct. 

Horticultural Services

  • These services are seasonal and are normally available from March to October. They are currently being reorganised so if this is an area of employment you are interested in please get in touch to discuss your options.

Training

  • Both these services are underpinned by SCARF's reputation and ability to deliver City & Guilds training.

Momentum Skills:

Aberdeen City Vocational Service: Mental Health

  • Momentum has provided specialist Mental Health services in Grampian for the last 10 years. The services will assist individuals to reduce social isolation and participate in meaningful activities with a focus on increased independence and employability.

  • Momentum has provided a specialist ABI vocational service in Grampian for over 16 years. The service provides person-centred support to re-build confidence and skills.
    Working together with their specialist staff the individual service user will explore his or her social and vocational aims, develop realistic personal goals and be supported to achieve them by a key worker.

Send-it

Send-It provides a variety of modern, commercially orientated training placements to adults recovering from mental health difficulties and/or acquired brain injury. Send It

Training

Adults can choose from a range of activities. Participants can learn booklet making, shrink wrapping, using the guillotine, polybagging, folding and wire binding.

They also provide training on datab ase maintenance and management, using excel spread sheets and stock control.

They run a Graphics class to develop design skills and IT skills required to undertake printing tasks.

There is a healthy demand for Send-it's EBay service which allows people to utilise their Photoshop skills and photograph items to be auctioned. They also produce a yearly calendar which is photographed, edited and printed by those who use the service.
