Introduction

Union Street’s role as Aberdeen’s main shopping thoroughfare has an important contribution to make to vitality of the city. The city’s image is often judged on the public’s perception of the degree of vitality of Union Street, Aberdeen's most prominent street.

It is important that any significant changes taking place are monitored. The level of vacancies is one indicator of vitality within a shopping centre and this has been monitored in Union Street since 1988. Monitoring of all properties with a ground floor frontage on to Union Street is carried out with regular surveys.
