Introduction

Preparing for the Aberdeen Local Development Plan

In March 2009, Aberdeen City Council (ACC) will publish the programme for preparing the Aberdeen Local Development Plan. Its publication, in the Development Plan Scheme, formally opened up the process of plan preparation and is an invitation to citizens, the private and public sector to work with us in reforming the planning system here in Aberdeen.

Planning authorities are being urged to engage with all groups at the earliest opportunity in the preparation of the development plans for their areas. In response to this, ACC has initiated a process for gathering information about development options in the city, which sought to bring information about development proposals to the front of the consultation process, and raise the quality of those proposals. This initiative was approved by ACC at the Planning Committee on 11 December 2008.

The 'Development Options' process informed developers of the sustainability criteria used by officers to assess their development proposals. This process will improve how development opportunities are currently identified, as it will result in a more transparent process for developers, and allow early and informed community engagement.
