Improvements to the Streetscape

The streetscape of the Green is defined by the vertically enclosed, sometimes narrow streets which are partially surfaced in traditional granite material. These features are a key component to the character of the Green. Over time the distribution of granite flags, setts and kerbs has become fragmented with large surface areas covered in stretches of tarmac, concrete and pre-cast concrete paving. This detracted from the aesthetic quality of the area and in many areas the granite surface had also become worn and uneven.

An underlying principle of the design was to retain and re-use wherever possible the existing granite material in the area. In addition to the durable nature of the granite, the subtle shades of colour existent in the street patterns bring warmth of character to the streetscape. The existing granite was augmented with new granite chosen to match this variety of colour.

The Works

Work commenced in July 2009 and was finished in October 2010. The first major project under the THI to be completed. Aberdeen City Council in conjunction with their consultants AECOM developed proposals that were intended to result in four primary outcomes.

1.

The present street and walkway surfaces have been restored to provide acceptable surfaces for both pedestrians and motorists.
2. To improve the environment of, and access within, the area for pedestrians living or working in the area, visiting, or simply passing through.
3. The third outcome complements the second, to more effectively manage the vehicular traffic in the area whilst retaining vehicular access for residents and businesses.
4. To increase the attractiveness of the area for residents, visitors and businesses, by introducing trees and shrubs, provision of new seating and improved street lighting.

The work consisted of removing the existing granite pavement, relaying and augmenting with new granite and the reshaping of same to modern standards together with some soft landscaping and revised drainage.

The seven drawings list in the Downloadable Forms section show the streetscape works plans. They are .pdfs that may take sometime to download and of A1 in size, requiring you to zoom in to read the detail.

The first drawing is the Master Plan and shows the overall plan as at 1 July 2009. The remaining drawings are details of the proposals during the Planning Consultation and are indicative of the design approach for specific streets.

The Principal Contractor carrying out the work on behalf of Aberdeen City Council was Leiths (Scotland) Ltd., Rigfa, Cove, Aberdeen AB12 3LR.
