Leafing the Green
Introduction
Leafing the Green is a project centred on a writer in residence. The writer has been commissioned to:
- generate creative writing activity with schools and their communities using the historic urban environment as a stimulus for learning and creativity
- generate their own body of work
Leafing the Green brings together a range of partners with parallel agendas in the areas of culture, education and heritage conservation; it forms the focal point of public engagement for The Green Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) in Aberdeen and simultaneously targets participatory activity on one of the city's most socially deprived neighbourhoods.
The historic urban environment of The Green is a rich resource of creative inspiration for any artist; from its significance in the history of Aberdeen, to archaeological studies of the area, to the sensory and emotional experience of being there, to the individual characters of past and present.
Writer Raman Mundair is working with schools and the local community to inspire and enthuse them on a shared creative journey.
Raman Mundair was born in India, raised in Manchester and Leicester and lives and works in Scotland. Mundair is the author of A Choreographer's Cartography, Lovers, Liars, Conjurers and Thieves and The Algebra of Freedom. She is a Robert Louis Stevenson Award winner, a Rolex Mentor and Protégé Award nominee and was identified recently by the BBC/Royal Court Theatre as one of the 'next generation of promising new writers in Britain' (24 Degrees Project). In 2009 Raman was chosen as one of two British writers to participate in the Word Express: Literature Across Frontiers project. Word Express took 20 young writers from 12 European countries by train through South-Eastern Europe to Turkey. The writers took part in readings and literary events in each country they passed through. Raman contributed to the recent Scottish PEN publication, Departures. Raman's artworks have been exhibited at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, the City Art Gallery, Leicester, the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin and displayed along major rail routes in Scotland in the Here Now There Now project.
The THI project is a five year scheme; Leafing the Green began 18 months into this and runs until October 2012.
