Water Pollution

Good quality water is an essential need of our society.  We rely on our rivers, streams, ground water and the sea for many purposes, including the provision of a wholesome drinking water supply and maintenance of a healthy environment for flora and fauna and for recreational purposes.  The Council is not directly involved in the routine monitoring of the public drinking supply or of watercourses, however we work with other partnership organisations such as the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Scottish Water websites to ensure pollution is controlled and water is safe to drink.  Areas where the authority has a role include:

  • Sampling of private water supplies
  • Risk assessment of private water supplies and provision of grant aid
  • Investigation of complaints regarding drinking water quality
  • Investigation of water pollution incidents
  • Provision of information on the quality of the bathing water at Aberdeen Beach
  • Monitoring the quality of bathing water at swimming pools
  • Provision of general information to the public, businesses and other interested parties
