Carbon Management Programme

Aberdeen City Council signed up to the Local Authority Carbon Management Programme (LACMP) for the second time in May 2009.

The scheme provides councils with support and guidance to help them accurately measure carbon emissions and identify opportunities to make carbon emissions savings. By undertaking this project we will identify an accurate, up to date picture of the Council's carbon emissions and from that develop a detailed Action Plan which will allow the Council to continually reduce its CO2 emissions in forthcoming years.

The programme will tackle a reduction in emissions from council buildings and vehicles; and will take a specific look at the carbon impact from street lighting, business travel, ICT equipment and waste.

In establishing a Carbon Management programme the Council has set a new target to reduce Aberdeen City Council's CO2 emissions by -

  • 23% by 2015
  • 42% by 2020, using the financial year 2008/2009 as a baseline.

Thereafter, reduce the Council's CO2 emissions year on year in line with national legislation.

Carbon Management Plan 2010-2015

Carbon Management Programme 2003 - 2004

The Council was a pioneer of the Carbon Trust Local Authority Carbon Management Programme (LACMP) from May 2003 to April 2004. Following completion of the programme the council committed to a CO2 reduction target of 10% by 2010, and a further 15% by 2015 - baseline year 2002-2003.

These targets were exceeded far ahead of schedule in 2006 when a 31% reduction was achieved  through a change street lighting using 100% renewable energy and through building improvements.

This achievement was recognised when the City Council won the "Energy Efficiency : Public Sector" category in the prestigious Carbon Trust/Daily Telegraph Innovation Awards 2007 for itsinnovative and long-standing commitment to cutting its carbon emissions.

The awards were created to showcase the very best practice in the public and private sectors in using new technologies and energy-efficiency measures to reduce CO2.

The City Council also now measures all its policies, plans and purchases against their potential environmental impact.
