Coastal & Marine Environment

Integrated Coastal Zone Management

Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is an EU led strategy delivered at a local level, and deals with the coastal and marine environment in a sustainable way.  The European Commission has defined ICZM as: -

'A dynamic, multi-disiplinary and iterative process to promote sustainable management of coastal zones.  It covers the full cycle of information collection, planning (in its broadest sense), decision making, management and monitoring of implementation.  ICZM uses the informed participation and co-operation of all stakeholders to assess the societal goals in a given coastal area, and to take actions towards meeting these objectives.  ICZM seeks, over the long-term, to balance environmental, economic, social, cultural and recreational objectives, all within the limits set by natural dynamics'.

At a local level, the East Grampian Coastal Partnership (EGCP) has been set up to aid in the delivery of ICZM in the East Grampian area.  More specifically, the area covered is between Kinnaird Head, Fraserburgh to the mouth of the River North Esk on the Aberdeenshire/Angus Council boundary.

As a funding partner, Aberdeen City Council has a commitment to support the EGCP in delivering its aims and objectives.  That is to protect, preserve, promote and enhance the coastal and marine environment in the East Grampian area in a sustainable way for current and future generations.
