Aberdeen City Archives exists to collect and preserve historical records relating to the City of Aberdeen and its locality and to secure significant modern records for future generation.

What's On...

We will have a stall at the Portsoy Traditional Boat Festival on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July where we will have a display of maritime related items in our collections.  Come along and see us!

Thank you to all who visited our stalls at the St Ternan's Fair in Banchory on Saturday 13th June, the Ellon Heritage Fair on Monday 8th June, Laurencekirk on Saturday 23rd May, the Scottish Family History Fair on Saturday 25th April and the Huntly Heritage Fair on Sunday 3rd May.  We thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all.

We have updated our leaflets and these are available at our Information Leaflets page.  A new leaflet, Aberdeenshire's Archives has been added which gives information about the holdings at our Old Aberdeen House branch.  We will be sending out hard copies of the leaflets in due course, but feel free to download and print off copies as required.  If you require any leaflets please contact us.

We have recently added guides and lists to various collections available for viewing online.  We hope to have more appearing each month, so keep checking our Catalogues page for updates!

We are now into the second year of our Document of the Month feature.  We have showcased different documents from various collections each month and we hope that we have given people the opportunity to not only see what different archives are like, but also introduce a wider variety of items to our visitors.  Let us know what you think by contacting us at archives@aberdeencity.gov.uk.

Aberdeen City Archives - what we do

Acting within the Resources Management Service, the unit provides an important service to members and officials while maintaining a strong public profile through its searchroom services and outreach activities.

The unit also provides a professional archives service for Aberdeenshire Council.

Staff ensure that the records are housed in secure accommodation under suitable environmental conditions on two sites - the Town House and Old Aberdeen House.

Fragile material is protected and stored appropriately and conservation of documents is undertaken by specialists when required.

The records are sorted and catalogued by staff and made available to the public in the City Archives' searchrooms. At present, collection level descriptions of some of our records are available on the website of the Scottish Archive Network.

Aberdeen City Archives offers a full range of modern reader services at its two public search rooms. Access to most of the records held in the City Archives is free to the public, however, users of certain classes of records for commercial purposes will be subject to charges.  Details of our charges are available via our  Table of Fees or on request.
