Working conditions and rewards - what we offer
We want to help you strike a balance between your work and personal life - so we have a variety of ways you can work flexibly, and in many cases we exceed legislative requirements to promote the welfare of our employees. Our flexible working options include opportunities to work full-time, part-time and job share. You may also be interested in working during the school term, to a shift pattern or even at times from home and we also operate a flexi-time system in many of our services that allows you to fix your start and finish times and save additional hours to take time off at a later date.
Your annual leave entitlement is 27 days, rising to 32 days after 5 years continuous service and 35 days after 10 years. In addition, you're entitled to 7 public holidays throughout the year. If you work part time, you'll have your leave calculated on a pro rata basis according to the amount of hours and number of weeks you work.
Annual leave for holidays, leisure or other purposes is not the only form of leave we offer. We appreciate that there are many other reasons why you might need to take time off from work and we're extremely supportive of this. Our generous provisions for time off include having children (including adoption), caring for children and other dependants and rehabilitation after illness.
Where you satisfy the qualifying conditions, entitlement to sickness allowance will depend on your length of continuous local authority service as follows:
|Service at start of absence||Full allowance||Half allowance|
|Less than 6 months||Nil||Nil|
|More than 6 months but less than 1 year||5 weeks||5 weeks|
|1 year but less than 2 years||9 weeks||9 weeks|
|2 years but less than 3 years||18 weeks||18 weeks|
|3 years but less than 5 years||22 weeks||22 weeks|
|5 years or more||26 weeks||26 weeks|
We're committed to continuously developing our employees. So we aim to ensure that training and development is planned, delivered and monitored on the basis of equal opportunity for all. Your training and development needs will be discussed and identified in your annual appraisal.
You'll have access to one of the best final salary pension schemes within the UK. The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is a statutory, funded pension scheme. As a member, you pay lower National Insurance contributions than an employee of a contracted-in scheme, and you receive tax relief on your contributions. Your benefits are defined and guaranteed in law. To find out more, visit www.lgps.org.uk or www.nespf.org.uk
We've been working with leading public sector accountants RSM Tenon since 2007 to provide a tax-free childcare benefits scheme for employees with responsibility for children. The amount you save will depend on the amount you sacrifice and also the rate at which you pay tax but employees who opt into the scheme can save as much as £900 per year.
You'll have the opportunity to join the National Dental Plan, which offers cost effective dental insurance with a choice of cover plans for you and your family. You'll also be offered the opportunity to join CS Healthcare, a provider of low-cost comprehensive health insurance. Membership of both schemes is by employee contribution.
Employee assistance programme
Our employee assistance programme is provided to all employees free of charge. It offers confidential telephone support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Face to face counselling can also be arranged by request.
Our occupational health service provides advice to our managers and employees regarding fitness for work, the prevention of work related ill-health and the promotion of good health. In June 2008, we were awarded the Healthy Working Lives 'Bronze' award, which recognises the efforts we're making to improve the health of our workforce and we're now in the process of working towards the 'Silver' award.
A generous relocation package is available in appropriate circumstances if you have to relocate to Aberdeen to work with us. The package includes removal expenses, solicitors' fees, and temporary accommodation. We've also enlisted Pickfords to help you move to take up a job here. Working in partnership with Team Relocations, they offer a full moving service - from assisting you with house hunting, to providing information on local schools, to moving your possessions - all at preferential rates.
Phased and flexible retirement
Our phased retirement scheme allows you to reduce your working time by one day each week in the 6 months prior to your retirement date, if you have 10 years qualifying service. The aim of the scheme is to help you manage the transition between work and retirement and the reduction in your working week will not affect your salary or pension rights.
The Local Government Pension Scheme regulations also allow you to make a flexible retirement request to reduce your hours of work and/or grade of post whilst accessing your pension benefits either in full or in part providing you meet the qualifying conditions.
