Duties are diverse and can range from reception work and word processing to using computerised and financial packages.
Child care
Child care workers work with groups of young children in a range of facilities including schools, nurseries, children's homes, crèches, playgroups and family centres. They're not only responsible for the care of children but also their development planning educational play activities and participating in and directing play.
Cleaning and catering
Keeping our schools and other properties across the city clean and tidy is a priority along with ensuring our children and other service users are offered healthy, balanced meals.
Customer service
We're committed to giving our customers the best possible service and have customer service opportunities across the city. These include jobs within our museums, galleries and libraries as well as in our customer access points, where our advisors ensure that the needs of our customers are fulfilled.
Environmental health
Our environmental health officers specialise in areas including food safety, health and safety, planning and building warrant liaison, licensing and animal health. Our environmental protection team also deals with noise abatement, air quality, public health, private sector housing, contaminated land and port health.
Finance
We have a team of accountants and finance staff that track and manage how council funds are spent. Our payroll section also plays a vital role in co-ordinating and managing the process to ensure that our 9,500 employees get paid on time.
Gardening
Maintaining green spaces and award-winning floral displays in the city centre is a key priority for our environmental team. These roles are not just about keeping the city clean and tidy, but also about creating new open spaces for the citizens of Aberdeen to enjoy.
Information and communication technology
Our information and communication technology teams provide infrastructure support to our elected members, employees and numerous software suppliers. On a daily basis, they develop and evaluate ICT solutions and advise our services on the use of technology within key areas of activity.
Planning
Planners are involved in a range of activities, from producing and updating policy documents such as local and structure plans for the city, to assessing householder planning applications - from conservatories and extensions, through to major new retail or housing developments. As well as protecting and enhancing the built environment, planners play a role in safeguarding the natural environment for future generations.
Pupil support
Pupil support assistants help promote effective learning, teaching and personal development in schools including supporting literacy and numeracy, preparing for lessons and classroom supervision. They need to have experience of working with school age children and be able to respond positively to special educational needs.
Social care
Social care staff provide a range of services in day centres, residential establishments and to people living in the local community. They help people remain in their own homes with as much independence as possible by giving day to day care to the elderly or people with disabilities who are unable to look after themselves and who, without such vital help, would likely require residential, nursing or hospital care.
Social work
Our social work teams are organised to meet the needs of our service users so we have social workers who specialise in working with children and families while others work with ex-offenders within our criminal justice system. We also have a large team of professionals who support people with learning or physical disabilities or mental health issues. Our social workers all have a relevant social work qualification (CSS, CQSW, Dip SW) and are registered with the Scottish Social Services Council.
Surveying
The council's investment in real estate is managed by our surveyors. So, when wheelchair access is required in a public building or planning permission is sought for a business venture on public land, the surveyor will play a vital role.
Surveyors are also responsible for the maintenance, repair and improvement of all council property and are involved in building projects from the planning stage through to final completion.
Teaching
Our vision is to develop Aberdeen as a city for learning, with public, voluntary and private sectors all working together to provide a quality learning environment for our children. Inclusion, raising achievement and lifelong learning lie at the heart of our plans, and professional and motivated teachers are crucial to providing high quality learning experiences for our young people. All of our teachers require full registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.
Technicians
Technicians are employed in a range of areas across the council from schools, to public protection, where they support services such as environmental health and trading standards, to planning, architecture and quantity surveying where they input into planning and building services applications.
Trades
As well as providing a vital service in maintaining our housing stock, our trades people work on new buildings and projects across the city in collaboration with our architects and engineers. As well as employing a range of plumbers, joiners, painters and electricians, we also have opportunities for apprenticeships and these are advertised throughout the year.
Trading standards
Trading standards officers work to safeguard the public and ensure that legislation designed to protect the public consumer is followed. Their job has two main aspects - to investigate complaints and to monitor the quality of services and goods, which means they work closely with the police and businesses throughout the city.
Waste reduction
The average family throws out around five tonnes of waste every year for our waste management and refuse collection services to collect, bury, burn or recycle. Recycling is at the forefront of our agenda so we have a variety of opportunities to work on environmental action plans and implement initiatives for recycling waste materials.
