EXPLORE ABERDEEN

How are homelessness applications assessed?

Those applying as homeless must satisfy the following four categories in order to be permanently rehoused under homelessness legislation. These categories are described in some detail below:

1. Are you homeless or threatened with homelessness?
2. Are you in priority need?
3. Are you intentionally homeless?
4. Do you have a local connection with the city of Aberdeen?

The Homelessness Section can be contacted either by phone, fax, email or in person. At first approach, we will ask a few brief questions about household composition; current or last known address; safety of household items; ethnic origin and the reason for homelessness or potential homelessness. We will provide temporary accommodation to eligible applicants if required.

At initial contact we will seek to stabilise the applicant's situation if homeless or intervene to prevent homelessness occurring.

A full interview will be arranged with a Homelessness Officer and details of any special needs established (e.g. an interpreter or signer).

Applicants have the right to be interviewed by an officer of the same sex. The purpose of the interview is to reach a statutory decision, advise applicants on rehousing options and identify any support or resettlement needs. The Council offers a limited number of same day interviews on a first come first served basis.
