How can we help you...

Getting help to prevent homelessness

You might be in rent arrears or struggling to pay your mortgage or have other debt problems. Maybe you feel that you don't have the skills to manage all aspects of running a house – budgeting, cooking, dealing with neighbours, etc. Or could it be that other issues such as mental health, drugs or alcohol are making it difficult for you to cope on your own.

We have a range of responses (below) which we might use to address many of the main causes of homelessness.

Cause of homelessness  Prevention response
Parents, relatives or friends exclusions Mediation/counselling, home visits
Relationship Breakdown – Non Violent Advice on rights under relevant legislation, relationship counselling, housing options
End of short assured tenancy Advice, landlord mediation/negotiation, rent deposit guarantee
Mortgage or rent arrears Debt counselling, advocacy in court, resolving HB problems, Prevention Fund, Mortgage Rescue Schemes
Person poorly-equipped to sustain tenancy Advice and support, life skills, budgeting, social network
Lack of household goods to create a home Tenancy Set Up/Prevention Fund
Lack of information Early, proactive intervention, advice and good range of options
Underlying issues – drugs, alcohol, mental health, etc Support packages, improving employability

Within the prevention approach we will look with you at housing options. All options need to be seen equally rather than social housing being considered a "better" or "more desirable" outcome.

Some people are not ready to take on the responsibilities of managing their own tenancy and we can provide supported accommodation to help prepare people for these responsibilities. We can also provide support for people moving into their tenancy. We may also be able to provide assistance with getting furniture for your new home.

The Leaving Home and Housing Education Schools Programme is delivered by the Cyrenians in Aberdeen City secondary schools. Its purpose is a preventative tool for those young people thinking about leaving home on a whim and to provide the steps to take/organisations to contact if homelessness is threatened.
