Document of the Month November 2008
Culter School Log Book - the end of World War I
2008 marks the 90th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice in November 1918 which ended the First World War. We have chosen as our document of the month an entry from one of the many school log books held by Aberdeen City Archives at our Old Aberdeen House office. The entry, from Culter School log book (reference GR6S/A20/1/2) is as follows:
November 11
School was re-opened this morning after
being closed for three weeks on account of an
epidemic of Influenza. All the staff were
present, and 343 pupils out of 435.
9 new pupils were enrolled.
At 11am official confirmation of the news was received
that the Germans had agreed to the terms of
Armistice and that the war was over.
Pupils were assembled in Central Hall and
were addressed by the Headmaster. After
singing God Save the King and giving
cheer for our great victory, the scholars
were dismissed for the day.
Other school log books recount the end of the war in similar fashion, and many of them note they were closed because of the flu epidemic.
