Pencil Drawing of a Decorative Spandrel from a Church in Kent (c. 1928) by R. D. Cruikshank

This drawing comes from a number of pictures that were rescued along with a large number of other records from an attic in Arbuthnott House in Peterhead in 1996.

The items consist largely of speculative architectural drawings for buildings and their details (such as classical columns), suggesting that they formed part of a portfolio submitted by Cruikshank as his application for the post of Peterhead Burgh Architect. His talent and ability clearly shines through in all of the pictures, but particularly in the impressive drawing of the Gothic spandrel shown here. It is easy to see from this picture that he had a keen eye for detail, which was probably a quality that contributed to his eventual employment by the burgh in the 1950s.
