Council Tax Reductions
The Council Tax charge contains both a personal and a property element. The Council Tax charge assumes that two adults have their 'sole or main residence' in the home. An 'adult' for Council Tax purposes is someone who is aged 18 years or over. Anyone under 18 is not included when calculating the number of people in your property.- If only one adult has their main residence in your home, your bill will be reduced by a quarter (25%).
Certain people are ignored when counting the number of adults resident. These include:
- 18 and 18 year olds who have just left school
- full-time students
- apprentices, Youth Training trainees and student nurses
- (in certain cases) the foreign spouse of a student
- Patients who are resident long term, in a hospital or care home
- People who are severely mentally impaired
- Carers and Careworkers
- People in prison
These people are described as being 'disregarded for the purposes of discount'.
Empty Properties/Second Homes:
If the property is empty you may get a 10% discount. For a second home and other furnished property, which is not a main home, the charge is 90% but from 1 April 2006 the full amount of water and sewerage is payable. Please note that Aberdeen City Council staff may undertake visits to inspect properties which are claimed to be vacant and unfurnished/altered and repaired.
