BBC Springwatch Action Team hits Aberdeen

04/06/08

The BBC will be getting its hands dirty this weekend as it digs into a wildflower planting project with Aberdeen City Council Countryside Ranger Service.

Work will be undertaken at Donmouth Local Nature Reserve on Sunday, 8 June, as part of the BBC Breathing Spaces programme, and BBC Springwatch. The Countryside Rangers will be hosting a public wildflower planting day in the area between the bird hide and the Esplanade.

The Landward team will also be on hand, filming the work for their programme the following week.

The Springwatch Action Teams will have just one day to transform four neglected areas of land in Scotland into areas of beauty for people and wildlife. Euan McIlwraith will be presenting the Aberdeen project.

Countryside Officer Ian Talboys said: “This is a great opportunity for the local community to get involved with brightening up an area of previously mown grassland to make it into a more colourful and wildlife friendly area.  The work is easy so there is something for all ages.  Everyone is very welcome to come along”.

The work will start at 10am and go on until about 5pm, with live inputs into BBC Radio Scotland programmes during the afternoon.

There will be about 1,500 wildflower plants to plant, as well as some bird boxes to build, and there will also some bird boxes to build and Ranger-led guided walks and mini-beast hunts during the day too.

Hot and cold drinks will be provided during the day along with all the tools needed, but it would be helpful if participants could bring a trowel or small spade with them.

It would also be helpful if volunteers would let the Countryside Rangers Service know they plan to take part in the event.
