28/08/08

Television gardening personality Chris Collins will be joining green-fingered and green-minded folk this weekend for the Aberdeen EcoCity awards.

The Blue Peter gardener and Councillor Ron Clark will present prizes to the award winners for their environmental improvement work during a special ceremony at Aberdeen Blooms.

The winners, who will be selected by a panel of expert judges, have been involved in a range of community and educational projects to protect or enhance the environment in the city.

Councillor Clark, a gardening enthusiast, said: “Once again we were overwhelmed by the high quality of entries to the awards and the wide range of eco projects that are underway across the city from waste reduction to nature conservation.”

All finalists have been invited to attend the ceremony at 1pm on Saturday [30 August]. The winners in the Educational Establishment and Community Group category will receive £500 and the runners-up will receive £250.

A further prize of £1,000 will be presented to the overall Gold Award winner for the best overall project. A special prize of £100 in the under 16 category and £100 in the over 16 category will be awarded to the winners of the Fantastic it's not Plastic bag design competition run in conjunction with the Fantastic it's not Plastic campaign against plastic bag litter, which was re-launched this year.

All winners and runners up will receive a certificate and a goody bag.

The Aberdeen EcoCity Awards are run by the council’s, EcoCity team. This year’s awards have been funded by Aberdeen Airport, Keenans Recycling, The Junction, EnviroCentre and Wood Group.
