EXPLORE ABERDEEN

Winter trails at Tolbooth Museum on offer

02/12/08

Places are still available on the fascinating winter trails at The Tolbooth Museum, Castle Street which start at 4pm on Sunday, 7 December.

The trails will explore the history of Aberdeen’s Tolbooth with a chance to meet characters from its past including Thomas Fraser, the early 17th century gaoler, his long suffering wife, and prisoner Andrew Kellie - a merchant who was imprisoned for debt but had various scams to make money.

The tours will conclude in the basement of local restaurant La Lombarda, where some festive hospitality in the form of mulled wine and minced pies can be enjoyed.

Aberdeen City Council’s assistant keeper (Research) Chris Croly said: “We are delighted to offer these tours which give an interesting insight into the goings on at The Tolbooth.

“Prisoners like Andrew Kellie, were civil prisoners and could actually buy a key to the prison and let themselves out during the day, they simply had to return by a certain time at night. They were a real thorn in the side of the Gaolers, especially, if like Kellie, they were still getting involved in money making schemes, even when they were already behind bars. These tours should be a lot of fun.”

Tours will be held on:
Sunday, 7 December and Sunday, 14 December
4pm and 6pm each day.

Ticket prices:  £7 (£6 concessions and friends of Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums).
Seasonal refreshments are included in the ticket price for all tours.

Advance booking is essential – telephone (01224) 523700 to ensure a place.
