CCTV cameras to watch over Torry’s main shopping area

Cutting-edge security cameras will be installed in an Aberdeen neighbourhood this summer.

Two CCTV cameras will be set up on Victoria Road in Torry to help the community feel safer on the streets.

The cameras will cover Torry’s shopping area and will gather digital images. The “wireless” CCTV system will relay the pictures to Grampian Police headquarters, to wardens and to beat officers via the internet rather than via the cable network which normal CCTV relies on.

The £40,000 project is being financed from Aberdeen City Council’s capital budget.

Torry city councillor Yvonne Allan said: “I am delighted that the area of Victoria Road, Walker Road and Menzies Road will be covered by this new system. The equipment will have the ability to allow the community wardens and the police to see the images on their own hand-held devices and react rapidly and appropriately.

“Once this is up and running and has been assessed, we are hoping that the system can be developed and extended.”

Corporate Director for Neighbourhood Services (South) Gordon McIntosh said: “This is all about safer streets and community confidence. The presence of CCTV cameras will give people the reassurance that we are looking out for the community even when there is no uniformed police presence in the immediate area. Grampian Police, meanwhile, has also given an assurance that it will be putting as much of a presence as possible into the area.

“This is a small pathfinder project using new technology and we will be monitoring it closely to study whether it can be extended to other areas.”

Grampian Police CCTV manager Sgt John Souter said: “These additional cameras are a welcome addition to the fixed system, which has proved such a success over the last 10 years. Together with the other wi-fi cameras, they will allow a dynamic response to local issues that we have not been able to provide previously.”
