Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have the highest levels of broadband uptake in the UK but some of the slowest speeds. As part of Shaping Aberdeen we are striving to improve this, for both residential and business needs.
As part of Shaping Aberdeen, Accelerate Aberdeen is an ambitious programme of work to provide Aberdeen with the world class infrastructure and business development platforms to secure the long term vibrancy of the City's economy.
Free Wi-Fi is now available to the public 30 Aberdeen City Council buildings, as part of the latest work to be delivered by the Accelerate Aberdeen programme.

Aberdeen City Council have a Wireless Concession with Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG) enabling the deployment of 4G small cells within the city centre and beyond by allowing access to the Council's street furniture and buildings.
The three Innovation Hubs are based at Elevator, the Robert Gordon University and the University of Aberdeen. The Department of Culture and Media Studies (DCMS) have provided grant funding for these centres. The Elevator hub was opened in October 2014. The hubs at RGU and the University of Aberdeen have had their official launches and the first tenants should be in residence over the summer. These hubs will support business growth through the use of digital technology and encourage entrepreneurial activity to create new products and services.
In Aberdeen there are now several companies unbundling exchanges to enable superfast and ultrafast connections for businesses. There are companies also investing in brand new fibre within the city.
Connection Voucher Scheme
Hundreds of businesses in Aberdeen have taken advantage of a UK Government voucher scheme to boost broadband connectivity. A total of 368 companies in Aberdeen have benefited from the initiative. The Broadband Connection Voucher Scheme was designed to get small and medium enterprises (SMEs) moving into a faster digital market and connected to superfast broadband.
Whilst the scheme has now closed, its success has stimulated the market, with some suppliers now offering similar support through offers of free installation and equipment. This means that those eligible businesses who didn't apply for one of the Government's Broadband Connection Vouchers still have time to apply for a free or discounted broadband boost for their business.
Please visit Connection Voucher Scheme for further information.
Rest of Scotland Programme
Premises are also benefiting from the Scottish Government's Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband (DSSB) programme. More than 88.8% per cent of Aberdeen's premises are in reach of fibre based superfast broadband services through DSSB and BT Openreach's own commercial programme, with a target of over 95 per cent fibre coverage by 2017.
Aberdeen City Council are working with Scottish Future's Trust to develop business models to deliver digital infrastructure and services to new housing developments and existing neighbourhoods.
