Gender
Our Council services are provided to a population of 210,400, women making up 51% and men making up 49% of the population. We also recognise that we have an ageing population, therefore an increasing number of elderly women living in poverty.
We have made considerable progress in reducing gender inequality in the city. There are visible signs of an improving picture with increasing numbers of women at Senior Manager level within the Council. The immediate concern is equal pay for women and men doing work of equal value and as a Council, we have put in place measures to ensure this.
Aberdeen City Council welcomed the Gender Equality Duty introduced in April 2007 and the challenges and opportunities that it presents. We are committed to improving the life circumstances of all our citizens and encouraging all women and men to develop their full potential.
Our Gender Equality Scheme and Action Plan, which includes Transgender, is now integrated within and reported through our Single Equality Scheme and Action Plan (November 2009-2012)
