Age

The General Register Office (Scotland) 2008 estimate of the population for Aberdeen is 210,400 of which 41,064 are 10-24 year olds, while there are 84,818 in the 45 plus age group.

The population of Scotland is ageing and the working age population in the city through to 2031 is projected to decrease by over 15%. Research and everyday experience shows that age discrimination exists, and people are still
being wrongly judged because of their age, not their experience, abilities and personality

Aberdeen City Council is committed to implementing Age Equality related policies and legislation such as:

• The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child;
• The Getting it Right for Every Child programme;
• Curriculum for Excellence;
• The Early Years Framework;
• Delivering on the Scottish Government's All our Futures; and
• The Older People's Strategy for over 50s.

Aberdeen City Council is an Age Positive Employer Champion. There is currently no upper age limit on applying for a post with Aberdeen City Council. The Older People's Working Group oversees the Older People's Action Plan for improving the city's services for older people. We also work closely with the Aberdeen City Youth Council to ensure the voices of Aberdeen youth are being heard.

Aberdeen City Council has been commended for its intergenerational work in bringing together older people and younger people, for example, sessions with younger people helping older people learn the skills of text messaging, social networking and wii fi.
