Aberdeen Prejudice Incident Partnership

Definition of a Prejudice Incident

  • "A prejudice incident is any incident where the perpetrator's prejudice against any identifiable group or people is a factor in determining who is victimised"

This definition must be understood to include both criminal and non-criminal conduct. Both must be reported, recorded and investigated with equal commitment.

Within Aberdeen City Council, the Equalities team in Customer Service and Performance provides advice, support and guidance in relation to equality for all. This includes help and guidance in reporting all prejudice incidents.

All staff, and in particular those whose work involves frequent contact with members of the public may be asked to report a prejudice incident. This may not necessarily be a matter relating to a Council Service. A prejudice incident may also occur within the workplace and our staff may be required to report or record such an incident.

All prejudice incidents must be reported and recorded. Unless incidents are reported, we cannot take action to prevent unacceptable behaviour in the future. Guidance about reporting prejudice incidents, together with a Prejudice Incident Reporting Form (PIRF), can be found from the link below:

All Partner Agencies are opposed to prejudice and discrimination. They are committed to taking all steps within their power to eliminate discrimination and prejudice incidents and to promote good relationships among all groups within our community.

This will be achieved by adopting aims and good working practices that reflect recognition of their responsibilities:

  • As a partner in multi-agency work practice
  • With regard to its legislative duties
  • As a public service provider
  • As an employer
  • As an influence on public opinion and attitudes
  • In consultation with all racial groups
