Rent Management Policy Statement
Aberdeen City Council has devised policy and procedures for Rent Management to ensure that firm but fair treatment of all citizens is applied.
In doing this Aberdeen City Council has based their arrears strategy on prevention of rent arrears. Early intervention is undertaken to prevent the accrual of arrears whilst a multi-agency approach has been adopted to ensure that arrears are dealt with by taking into account personal and financial circumstances.
All available methods of contact with the Council will be promoted to citizens in literature issued to them with their annual rent increase correspondence and on literature issued to them throughout the year.
Payment of rent in advance, in accordance with tenancy agreements, is promoted in correspondence and on Rent Management documentation. This aims to prevent Rent Arrears arising by ensuring rent payments are made on or before the due date.
We will ensure that availability of Housing Benefit and other welfare benefits are widely publicised and promoted to ensure maximisation of income. This will also secure the continued award of Housing Benefit to those who are entitled.
Legal action will be taken in certain circumstances but eviction would only be considered as a last resort.
All available methods of rent payment will be promoted and utilised.
Further information on Rent Arrears will follow in the new year.
